HELP US SAVE THIS MAJESTIC OAK TREE

Oak TreeThe veteran Oak Tree situated in the paddock, next to the car park for the disabled, close to Elvaston Castle. The Friends of Elvaston with support from the Woodland Trust are campaigning to save this veteran Oak tree from being felled to make way for the extension to the proposed development of Elvaston Castle into a hotel & conference centre.

This magnificent specimen is approximately 260 years old and has seen many changes in its long life. It has lived through the reign of no less than eight monarchs, from George 111 to the present day. It was alive when the British gained victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo, has lived through much of the Industrial Revolution, the coming of the railways & the invention of the aeroplane & motorcar.

As well as being beautiful to look at, trees form a vital part of the landscape. They conserve our world’s biodiversity by providing essential habitats for numerous animal & plant species. They stabilise the soil, preventing erosion, generate oxygen without which we humans would not be here, and absorb carbon dioxide, storing it in living tissue, which eventually takes that carbon out of circulation so preventing global warming.

The UK is now one of the least wooded places in Europe. In 1980 native species accounted for only 5% of new trees planted. Thanks to the Woodland Trust the figure is now 40%, but it has taken nearly thirty years of hard work to accomplish that figure.

So if you love trees, agree that they play a vital role in our planet’s ecological welfare & want to prevent the removal of one of them simply to make room for a hotel extension, please add your voice to those of the Friends of Elvaston & the Woodland Trust & say NO to the felling of this majestic Oak by signing our petition today.
