PLEASE NOTE: The following article refers to the 2006 Golden Gate Gallop. We are informed that a 2007 event is planned for September 23rd. Please contact the organisers, Mr. & Mrs Cowling, on 01332 752574, for details

THIS YEAR'S GOLDEN GATE GALLOP COULD BE THE LAST

This year's annual fun run in the grounds of Elvaston Castle, in aid of leukaemia research, may be the last. For the past 19 years, people have been using the paths of Elvaston Castle during the Golden Gates Gallop but organisers Margaret and Alan Cowling have said this years race will probably be the last because of Highgate Sanctuary's plans to transform the castle into an £18m hotel and golf course.

This year's event, which takes place on Sunday at 11am, will feature two routes, one of two miles and one of five, which both start and finish at the Golden Gates, in Borrowash Road. Anyone can take part and as well as the two runs there will be a barbecue, raffle and tombola, so it makes a lovely family day out." Only about 60 people have registered so far, with a total of 600 places available on the day.
