THE COUNTY COUNCIL'S GALLERY OF SHAME AT ELVASTON CASTLE

Here is a photographic record of some of the neglected buildings and machinery at Elvaston Castle Country Park. Many of the items of machinery were restored or in good working order when they were acquired by Derbyshire County Council. Home Farm had been restored by the Harrington Family and had been a working farm until shortly before the County Council took over the running of the Park.

The Water Wheel was fully repaired at public expense about twenty years ago by a specialist company called Dorothea Restorations. It ran for a short period, broke down and was left to rust. The County Council has not only wasted our money but it is neglecting our heritage. Would developers be more careful with our heritage or would cost come first?

As the Castle Building itself has a Grade 2* listing, proving that it is a building of special interest, the County Council, according to the law of the land, is legally obliged to keep it 'Wind and Weatherproof.' Despite this, the County Council is totally ignoring its obligations and responsibilities. Every time it rains, the staff are obliged to put buckets and an old tin bath underneath the hole in the ceiling to catch the torrent of water that pours through.

A county council spokeswoman said that design faults (sic) caused a leak in the ceiling of Lady Harrington's bedroom and problems with roof tiles on the stable block. She said;

" ...We were not aware of problems with roof tiles. As for the leak, the building is wind and weather-proof but, because of a problem with the design of the roof, rain water overflows into the gutters... "

As the building was designed by James Wyatt, one the finest British Architects of his period, and this was obviously working perfectly well until recent years, we cannot understand where the problems outlined by the County Council have occurred!

All of the Gallery pictures are the shame of Derbyshire County Council as it has allowed our heritage to rot. Housing artifacts away from the elements is a cheap way to ensure that restoration costs do not become necessary.
