ELVASTON PARISH COUNCIL DECLARATION
Here is a public notice and declaration
issued by Elvaston Parish Council in 2000 (link at the bottom of the
page), informing
people that they had until March 31st of that year to
have their say on Derbyshire County Councils
proposals for disposing of Elvaston Castle Country Park.
Proposals which the general public rejected
overwhelmingly, with 78.15% against such a move, with
over 63% being STRONGLY against it. Despite this,
Derbyshire County Council continued with its own chosen
course of action, incorrectly stating that 70% of
respondents had been in favour.
If you read the left hand column (which was
obviously the back page when folded!), especially the
last paragraph, which requests that any agreements
reached should preclude any increase in the existing
noise levels, or disturbance to the inhabitants of the
surrounding parishes, it will be immediately obvious that
these requests will be completely impossible to adhere
to, should Highgate Sanctuary obtain a lease (not to
mention of course, planning permission), for its hotel
and golf complex.
Apart from totally ruining the history and
landscape of the area, assuming that such a project was
to actually be allowed to go ahead (despite public
opinion), no one can predict what noise and traffic
levels will be reached, other than to say that they would
be considerably increased above what they are now. In
even supporting a scheme as controversial as this one,
the Derbyshire County Council is proving that it is not
only unwilling to act on public opinion, it is also
unwilling to take into account the wishes and objectives
of local government organizations other than its own.
This perhaps might provide even more evidence for those
who claim a north south divide in the County, an opinion
expressed to us by more than one civil servant.
